Messaging athletes, team hype and reactions
What it is
Three ways to stay in touch with your athletes inside the app: a one-to-one chat with each athlete, a quick cheer to your whole team, and emoji reactions to individual check-ins. Athletes see the cheers and reactions as notifications and a short celebration the next time they open the app.
How to use it
- Chat with one athlete. Open the athlete from your roster and use the chat at the bottom of their page (on mobile, open their chat from the roster). Type a message and send. New messages appear without refreshing. Use the paperclip to attach a video; see the video clips card.
- Hype the whole team. On your roster, choose Message your whole team (on mobile, Hype the team). Pick an emoji, add a short note if you like, and send. It goes to everyone you can reach, whether they are on your team or work with you directly.
- React to a check-in. In an athlete's recent sessions, tap React on a check-in and pick an emoji. Tap the same emoji again to take it back.
- Celebrate a streak. When an athlete's streak reaches 7 days, their page on the web shows a box to send a celebration with an emoji and a note.
- Athletes get a push notification (if they have the app and notifications on). A reaction on a check-in also shows in their recent reactions for 14 days.
Rules and limits
- You can message an athlete who is on your roster, either through a shared team or a direct link. For a minor, a parent must have approved you first unless they allow team coaches automatically. If the connection ends, the chat closes for you, including past messages. The athlete can still read it.
- Messages can be up to 4,000 characters. A message needs text or a video.
- When a conversation is closed, for example after a family report, nobody can post. A closed or disconnected chat shows as read-only.
- If you are connected only because a family invited you, you are an outside coach: your messages cannot contain links, email addresses, phone numbers or social handles, a linked parent can read the chat, and the family can report you, which closes the chat and ends your access right away.
- A team broadcast replaces your last cheer to the same athlete rather than adding another one, so only the most recent is waiting for them.
- Web hype notes are limited to 140 characters and mobile notes to 200.
- Reacting to a check-in again with the same emoji within 10 minutes does not send another notification. A different emoji does.
- You can only react to check-ins of athletes you can reach.
Edge cases
- The hype count you see afterwards counts everyone you can reach. Athletes who have not set up a profile do not receive it.
- Athletes see celebrations once. Opening them marks every waiting cheer as seen.
- The web hype box does not show an error if the send fails, so check that the "Sent to" message appears.
- There is no inbox for coaches. Open a conversation from the athlete's page or chat screen.
- Parents have their own messages with you, separate from athlete chats.
