Lessons: your own and assigning them

What it is

Lessons are short game-situation scenarios with a field diagram and a few key decision points. You can send any lesson from our library, or one you wrote yourself, to an athlete or a group, then see who has opened it.

How to use it

Send a lesson:

  1. On your roster, select an athlete or a group and choose Assign a lesson. On mobile, open a lesson and choose Send to athletes.
  2. Pick the lesson. The list is narrowed to lessons that fit the group's sport, age and positions. Search by title or category.
  3. Add an optional note (it can use simple formatting) and an optional Read it by date, then send. The athlete finds it in their lessons, marked as sent by you with your note.
  4. Follow along under Assigned Lessons on your roster. Each send shows how many have opened it and who has not; people still to open it come first.
  5. On mobile you can withdraw a send from the lesson's "who you've sent it to" list.

Write your own:

  1. Open My lessons and choose New lesson.
  2. Fill in the title, sport, positions, category, age groups, the scenario and up to 5 key decision points. Build the diagram with the diagram tool.
  3. Save it as a draft while you work, and mark it Ready when it is finished. Only Ready lessons can be sent.
  4. To start from one of our lessons, open it in the lesson library and choose to make your own copy. It arrives as a draft named "Copy of ...".
  5. On mobile, Talk it through lets you describe a lesson out loud and gets a draft to edit before anything is saved.

Rules and limits

  • You can only send to athletes on your roster, up to 100 at a time. If anyone in the list is not on your roster, nothing is sent.
  • A lesson must be Ready to be sent. You can send library lessons and your own, never another coach's.
  • Sending the same lesson to the same athlete again updates the note and date; it does not add a second copy.
  • "Opened" means they opened the lesson at least once, not that they understood it. The first open is the one that counts.
  • Titles can be up to 200 characters, the category 80, the scenario 5,000, each decision point 400.
  • Only you can see and change your own lessons.
  • Sending a lesson is recorded in the athlete's activity history.

Edge cases

  • Deleting one of your lessons also removes it from the athletes it was sent to.
  • Withdrawing a send removes it for everyone in that send.
  • If no lessons match a group's sport, age and positions, the list says so. Pick fewer or different athletes to see more.
  • A draft lesson does not show up when you assign lessons.
