Best Softball Coaching Apps in 2026, Sorted by What You Need
Softball coaching apps compared by job: scheduling and comms, scorekeeping, pitch calling, video, evaluations and daily training accountability, with costs.
By Next Athletix ·
Most "best softball coaching apps" lists are written by one of the apps. So is this one. Next Athletix is the entry in the daily training section near the bottom, and it is the only one of the six jobs on this page that we do. For the other five, the right answer is a competitor, and the page says which one.
It is sorted by job rather than by brand because "softball coaching app" means five different things depending on who is typing it: the calendar and the group chat, scoring and streaming games, calling pitches, breaking down a swing on video, running a tryout, or, the slice we serve, assigning the between-practice work and seeing who did it. Read the section for your job, take the app it points to, and skip the rest.
Details checked September 15, 2026; pricing and features change, so confirm on each product's site before you commit a roster to it.

First, which job do you need done?
Pick the line that sounds like your problem; each maps to a section below.
- Parents keep asking where practice is and the group text has 40 unread messages. You need team management and communication: TeamSnap, Heja, or the team side of GameChanger.
- Someone has to keep the book, and the family that could not make the tournament wants to watch. You need scorekeeping and live streaming: GameChanger or iScore.
- You want to call pitches without hand signals, or build a lineup that satisfies the playing-time rule without a spreadsheet. You need game planning and pitch calling: Rizzler or GoRout Diamond.
- A hitter's swing has a hitch and you want to show her, not tell her. You need video: OnForm.
- Tryouts are in three weeks and last year's evaluations were on index cards. You need evaluation software: SkillShark, or the tryout tools inside Rizzler.
- You practice twice a week and the other five days are a mystery, and the off-season is a longer mystery. You need daily training assignment and accountability: Next Athletix, or TeamBuildr if you have a strength coach and a weight room.
Most coaches need two of these, not one. That is normal, and the free tiers in the first two categories make it cheap.
Team management and communication
This is what most coaches mean when they say "an app": schedule, availability, roster, messaging. None of these is softball-specific, and that is fine; the job is the same in every sport.
TeamSnap is the established choice for a single team. The free plan covers scheduling, messaging, assignments and payments for a roster of up to 15 players, which fits most youth softball teams. Premium, at $10 a month billed annually or $15.99 month to month, adds availability tracking, larger rosters, practice-plan content and an ad-free experience for the owner and managers; Ultra, at $12.50 a month billed annually or $21.99 monthly, removes the roster cap. It is priced per team, so the coach or a team manager pays once and the families join free. Best for a travel or high-school team that wants the calendar, the carpool question and the availability poll in one place. Not for you if what you want is training between practices; the practice-plan library on the paid tiers is content to read, not sessions assigned to athletes and tracked.
Heja does a narrower version of the same job for free. Scheduling, team messaging, calendar sync and a fundraising feature, ad-supported on the free plan, with a Team Pro tier listed from $8.33 per team (the page does not state the billing cycle, so check before you buy). Best for a rec or 10U team where the coach is also the manager and wants the fewest screens between "practice moved to Thursday" and every parent knowing it. Not for you if you want payments, registration or anything a club administrator needs.
GameChanger also has a team side, messaging, scheduling and lineups, free for coaches listed as team staff. If you already score games on it, letting it be the calendar too is reasonable. It is covered in the next section because scoring is the reason to choose it.
If you run a club or league rather than one team, this is a different job with different tools; SportsEngine HQ, for example, is priced at $79 a month or $67 a month billed annually and is built for the organisation, not the dugout.
Scorekeeping and live streaming
Softball scorekeeping has its own rules, so the app has to name softball and mean it. Both of these do.
GameChanger is the default for youth baseball and softball for a reason: the scorekeeper's phone produces the box score, the play-by-play, the season stats and a live stream at the same time, and every parent already has the app. It is free for coaches on teams where they are listed as staff, and free to download for everyone; what costs money is the fan side. Family and fan subscriptions start, in GameChanger's words, "as low as $3.33 a month," and the Premium Family Plan, which covers four accounts, is $24.99 a month or $179.99 a year. Best for any team where the parents want to watch and the coach wants the stats to exist without doing the work. Not for you if you want the pitch-calling and matchup analysis a game-planning tool provides; GameChanger records what happened, it does not help you decide the next pitch.
iScore Baseball and Softball is the scorekeeper's scorekeeper: pitch-by-pitch tracking, more than 500 tracked stats, spray charts and scorecards, on iPhone, iPad and Android. The app is distributed through the app stores and iScore's site does not publish a price, so treat it as pricing on request and check the store listing. Best for a coach or team statistician who wants the depth and does not need the social layer. Not for you if the parents want a stream and a highlight reel; that is GameChanger's job.
We looked at Ballplayer as well; its site describes it as baseball only, so it is not on a softball page.
Game planning and pitch calling
This is where softball-specific matters most. Fastpitch has its own pitches, its own defensive rotations and, in many leagues, its own playing-time rules; a general-purpose tool gets in the way.
Rizzler is a coaching platform built for youth baseball, softball and a few other sports, aimed at "High School, Little League and Travel Clubs." The tools are the ones a dugout coach uses: drag-and-drop lineups with rule compliance, live scoring with pitch and hit charting, in-game intel and matchups, pitching analytics, tryouts and evaluations, and scheduling with parent communication. There is a free plan; the Coach plan is listed at $7.99 a month with a 14-day trial (at the time of checking the page shows it discounted to $0), and the Club plan is $79 a month. One subscription covers the whole team, and invited coaches, players and parents join free. Best for a travel or high-school coach who wants to plan the game, call the game and review the game in one app, and who would rather not run GameChanger and a spreadsheet side by side. Not for you if you only need the calendar; you would be paying for tools you never open.
GoRout Diamond is a different animal: an electronic pitch-calling system that pairs a coach's tablet or handheld with wearable displays the pitcher and catcher read. No signs, no wristband cards, no stolen signals. It is built for baseball and softball, and it is hardware, so it is priced accordingly: packages start at $950 and scale with the number of devices. Best for a high-school or college program that calls every pitch from the dugout and has a budget line for equipment. Not for you if you are a volunteer travel coach; the price is the answer.
Video and swing analysis
OnForm is the video-analysis app most softball instructors ended up on after Hudl Technique was acquired by OnForm in May 2021 and discontinued that summer. Record in slow motion, draw on the frame, add a voice-over, compare two swings side by side, and send the whole thing to the athlete in a message. It names softball and baseball among its sports, and it is priced per coach: Coach Basic is $19.99 a month or $199.99 a year, with a 14-day free trial and no card required. Athletes on the Individual Standard plan pay $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year, or nothing when they are working with a coach on a Standard or Pro plan. Best for a hitting or pitching coach who gives lessons and wants the feedback to live somewhere the athlete can rewatch it. Not for you if you want a tool that tells you the fix; OnForm shows the swing, you still have to know what you are looking at.
Evaluations and tryouts
SkillShark is player-evaluation software: build a scoring template, put evaluators on tablets, and get a ranked report and a player report card out the other end instead of a stack of index cards. The Prospect tier is free and covers 25 players, one group, one evaluation event and two evaluators, which is enough for a single team's tryout. Paid tiers are per athlete per year, sold in blocks of 25: Rookie at $5, All-Star at $10 and Legend at $15. Best for a club or high-school program running tryouts for multiple teams, or any coach who has been asked to justify a cut to a parent. Not for you if your roster is already set and you only evaluate once a year; the free tier probably covers you, and Rizzler's built-in tryout tools might be enough if you are already paying for it.
Daily training and off-season accountability
This is our category, so read it with that in mind. The job is different from the five above: not what happens at practice or at the game, but the five days a week you are not there and the twelve weeks between the last tournament and the first pre-season practice. The players who look different in the spring did something on those days, and most of a roster, left alone with a PDF, does nothing. No incumbent "best softball apps" list has a section for this job, which is either because the need is small or because nobody was building for it. We think it is the second.
Next Athletix assigns daily, position-specific softball training sessions to a roster and shows the coach who completed them. The coach creates a team, shows a QR code on their phone at one practice, and each athlete scans it and is on the plan before she leaves the field; athletes 13 and up create their own login, and under-13s join through a parent. The coach dashboard shows who did the work this week, who is on a streak and who has gone quiet, and a parent linked to an athlete sees that athlete's numbers and nothing else. Softball and baseball have separate training paths, so a softball catcher's sessions are built for the sport she plays. A coach account is free with no card. Athletes subscribe on their own account: a free athlete account includes one sample session a week, and the full daily plan is the Training plan at $20 a month per athlete, or $210 a year, with a 7-day free trial and nothing billed to the coach. If you want to know what the sessions are before you put a roster on it, the softball practice plans page and the off-season softball training plan are the same work laid out in the open, and the coaches page walks through the QR roster setup. Best for a travel or high-school coach who wants the between-practice work assigned and visible, and who is tired of finding out in April who trained in January. Not for you if you need a scheduler, a scorekeeper, video analysis or a recruiting service. It is none of those, and it is built to run alongside whichever of the apps above you already use.
TeamBuildr is the other tool that genuinely lives in this category, from the strength-and-conditioning side. It is a programming, reporting and data-collection platform used by high schools, colleges and professional teams: the strength coach writes the program, athletes log the lifts and the readiness data, and the staff sees compliance. There is a free trial with no card, and the Strength product starts at $90 a month or $900 a year for up to 50 athletes. Best for a high-school program with a certified strength coach, a weight room and a budget. Not for you if you coach a 12U travel team with no weight room; the program it manages is not the one your players need, and the price is built for a department.
Pricing at a glance

How to choose
Three questions, in order.
- What is the one thing that is broken right now? Not the thing you would like to have; the thing that costs you an hour a week or an argument a month. Parents lost: team management. No book: scorekeeping. Tryouts on paper: evaluations. Roster shows up in March out of shape: training accountability. Solve that first, on the free tier if there is one.
- Who pays, and who has to install it? Team-management and scorekeeping apps are paid by the team or free for the coach, and every parent installs them. Evaluation and video tools are paid by the coach or club and used by staff. Training tools are installed by athletes and paid by families, which means the coach has to explain why in person, not with a link in the group chat.
- Does it name softball, and does it matter for this job? For the calendar, no. For scoring, pitch calling and training, yes, because the rules and the mechanics are the sport's. If a vendor's site never says the word, assume the softball experience is the baseball one renamed.
Then expect to run two apps: the calendar and group chat in one, the job it cannot do in another. If that second job is the last one on this list, Next Athletix is free for coaches and getting the roster on it takes one practice. If it is any of the other five, the section above already told you where to go.
Questions coaches ask
- What is the best free softball coaching app?
- It depends on the job. For scheduling and team messaging, TeamSnap's free plan and Heja's free plan both cover a single team. For scorekeeping and live streaming, GameChanger is free for coaches listed as team staff. For lineups and game planning, Rizzler has a free plan. For evaluations, SkillShark's free tier covers 25 players and one event. For daily training assignments between practices, a Next Athletix coach account is free and athletes get one sample session a week at no cost. All of these were checked on the vendors' sites on September 15, 2026.
- Do I need a different app for softball than for baseball?
- Usually not for scheduling, messaging or video, which are sport-agnostic. It matters for anything that touches the rules or the mechanics: scorekeeping, pitch calling, and training sessions. Check that the app names softball as a supported sport rather than treating it as baseball with the word swapped. GameChanger, iScore, Rizzler, GoRout Diamond and Next Athletix each name softball on their sites.
- Can one app do scheduling and training?
- Rizzler and GameChanger both combine scheduling with game tools, and TeamSnap includes practice-plan content on its paid tiers. None of the apps on this page combines a full team calendar with assigned daily training sessions and completion tracking. Most coaches end up running two apps: one for the calendar and the group chat, and one for the job that app does not do.
- What do parents see in a training app?
- In Next Athletix, a parent linked to an athlete sees that athlete's streak and session history, the same numbers the coach sees for that one player. They do not see the rest of the roster, there is no parent leaderboard, and the app does not message parents on the coach's behalf. Other apps vary; check each vendor's parent or family page before you put a roster on it.
- What does Next Athletix cost a coach?
- Nothing. A coach account is free with no card required. Athletes subscribe on their own account: a free athlete account includes one sample session a week, and the full daily plan is the Training plan at $20 a month per athlete, or $210 a year, with a 7-day free trial. Nothing is billed to the coach. Current pricing is on the pricing page.
